3 Tips For First-Time Gun Buyers

Guns are a great way to protect yourself, and they can become a fun hobby. If you are thinking of purchasing your first gun, you may have a lot of questions. If you would like to know more, check out these three tips when buying your first gun.

1. Compare Different Guns

Start by determining which type of gun you need/want. For example, if you want something small to carry for protection, a handgun is a great choice, but for home protection, you may prefer something with more power like a shotgun. On the other hand, if you're thinking about getting into hunting, you may lean toward rifles.

Of course, there are tons of different types of handguns, shotguns, and rifles, so make sure to check out and compare different models, manufacturers, calibers, etc. The gun should feel comfortable in your hands, and you should be able to pull the trigger with ease. Don't forget to make sure you are comfortable with and capable of easily handling the safety.

2. Practice Using the Gun

Before you purchase any gun, make sure to practice using it. This is the best way to determine if it's a good fit, too powerful, etc. Many gun shops provide shooting ranges for your convenience.

Even after purchasing the gun, keep practicing. Even if you're only using the gun for possible defense, it's important to be familiar with how to use the gun, so you can move fast. Practice also reduces the risk of mistakes like misfires. If you're a hunter, making sure you can handle your gun makes for a cleaner and easier kill.

3. Get the Right Ammo

Finally, make sure you get the right ammo for your needs and gun. Different guns may take multiple types of bullets or shells, but different bullets have different pros and cons. Above all, however, make sure the ammo is suited for your gun, so you don't completely waste your money.

For example, if your gun is for defense, a round-nose bullet may be a good choice. They penetrate deep and cause a lot of damage, which translates to stopping power. However, if you're hunting big game, a heavy bullet may be a better choice. These move slower, but they are powerful at close range.

It's your right to own a gun for protection and/or hunting. However, buying your first gun can seem overwhelming. If you would like to know more, contact a gun shop in your area today.
